ON THE ROCKS 4-WHEELERS

A Dedicated Group

ON THE ROCKS 4 WHEELERS was founded in 1992 to provide a forum for local off-roaders in the Conejo Valley area near Los Angeles. The club brings together dedicated off-road enthusiasts of all levels and backgrounds. They organize a lot of day and weekend runs and occasionally set out for a longer, multi-day excursion. Most members drive their vehicles to and from the trail although a few rigs occasionally enjoy a ride on a trailer. Different experienced trail leaders are responsible for each run. All members get a chance to show off their favorite trail or suggest alternative routes.

Although the majority of vehicles is some form of Jeep model, any type of vehicle is welcome, but every rig must meet the Cal 4 Wheel safety requirements. From stock to heavily modified, all vehicles enjoy their share of fun on the trails. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to set minimum requirements for tougher trails to ensure a safe day out.

The off-road adventures go from mild to wild and members enjoy all types of excursions from the desert to the mountains and from the beach to the snow.

Depending on skill and vehicle, drivers can select from various trails, from easy scenic backcountry roads to the challenging Hammers in Johnson Valley. Every year the club attends well-known events like Tierra del Sol, Hi Desert Round-Up, and the Panamint Valley Days. They also organize a yearly Calico Ghost Town trip. Usually at least a few show up at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab too. The club offers trips every month and sometimes there are even several to choose from. Runs are posted in the calendar section of their website.

A club special is the 4x4 Rodeo, a day filled with fun including four-wheeling, a BBQ, and games for the next off-road generation. The highlight of the day is an obstacle course with a ‘blind-driving’ contest where different tasks have to be mastered along the way which gives members a chance to show off some unexpected driving skills.

The club has very experienced four-wheelers — up to competition level — and the trail boss of each run ensures that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time with a ‘no-one stays behind’ rule and no matter what breaks or happens, they get home together, even if it takes all night.

On the Rocks 4 Wheelers are dedicated to safety and the protection of the natural environment. From time to time they invite representatives of the forest service or other officials to their club meetings for educational talks and to exchange ideas and points of view. The members are also involved in clean-up runs and trail preservation. Information about club activities, legislation, events, trails and four-wheel-drive products is contained in their monthly newspaper, IN GEAR, available to all members. The club belongs to CAL4Wheel, Blue Ribbon Coalition, CORVA and the United Four Wheel Drive Association.

On The Rocks meets at 7pm on the fourth Tuesday of every month at Ameci’s Pizza (1724 E Avenida De Los Arboles, Thousand Oaks, Latitude N 34º 12’ 37.2”, Longitude W 118º 50’ 48.3”). They welcome new and prospective members of all ages and interests and invite everybody to come visit, enjoy some pizza and good company. They like seeing new faces and discussing new equipment and ideas. So why wait? Just show up!
