A Mock Hummer From McDill

I am submitting my picture and story for consideration on Letters & Stuff page. First, I must say that your magazine is a “Must Read” for me as soon as a new one arrives. Anyway, I custom built this 1986 Chevy 1-ton Military M1008 Truck into a Hummer look-alike with a kit body and parts from Classic Roadsters. I’m in Sarasota, Florida and the Truck came from McDill AFB in Tampa. It sports the 6.2L diesel, automatic, 4x4, Dana front axle, 14-Bolt rear which I changed to 4:10 instead of the 4:56 that came on the truck, real Hummer Goodyear OZ tires 37x12.50x16.5. The outside is finished and still working on the interior. Lots of fun getting it to this shape...Have yet to take it off road. Not sure if I will or not.

Once A Year Is Enough For Us
I enjoy receiving Off-Road Adventures magazine. My only question is do you need to have me send in the yellow form (in the magazine) to keep receiving the magazine every month or is once a year enough?
Yours Truly, Michael P. Lantz, Lakewood, CO
Michael, Once a year is enough to keep authorizing us to send you Off-Road Adventures. Anyone else who has not sent us the yellow form that is printed in the magazine, please do so we can continue to send you your copies. If you don’t want to cut it out, photocopy it, fill it out and mail it in. — D.S.
Do You Know The Way To Trail 115?
In your June issue of Off-Road Adventures on page 90, you show a picture of the XXXpedition XJ on Trail 115 near Boulder. Where is that trail? I live near Boulder and have not heard of it.
Thanks, Rick Kilton — Via email
Rick, Sven Schlogl says their website www.xxxpedition.com has all trails with directions under 2003 usa crosscountry 4x4 reports. Also, for all you non-internet types (are there any left?), here are the directions on paper. From Boulder, take Boulder Canyon Rd 119 west to Nederland, go north on Route 72 to Peaceful Valley. Follow the signs to Peaceful Valley F.S. Campground. Immediately after the campground, just past the gate, make a sharp right. The trail is marked 115.
Some Do. Some Don’t... And Punny Too!
As noted in your “High & Mighty” feature article (June 2004), the vehicle you featured “takes no prisoners.” For your information here is a similarly outfitted one (bull bar, winch, lockers, extra lighting, lift, rock sliders) that does take prisoners.
Enjoy, Mark Harris, BLM Ranger, St George, UT
Mark, We get the pun. Very funny! — D.S.
D-Day Remembered

I just wanted to say this past D-Day there was A LOT of stories, specials, etc, but I was surprised to find one of the best “accounts” written in my monthly copy of Off-Road Adventures. “Welcome to Omaha Beach” introduction really gave a taste of what I imagine it was like. Good Job!! I have attached a couple photos of my 2001 F-250 SD, that has a 6” Lift, 36x14.50/16.5 Swampers mounted on Classic rims, and with a Gibson, cat-back exhaust, all from 4WP. You folks have always been great to deal with even when I was shorted a spring on my lift. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
Sincerely, Kevin Janus, Quakertown PA
Kevin, Thank you. We were very thrilled when Jim Allen came up with the idea for this special Old Iron article. We really felt it was very well written and deserved the extra pages we devoted to it. On an interesting note, some WWII organizations and museums like the D-Day Museum in New Orleans and the Eisenhower Library have requested copies of the June issue for their visitors.
If there are other organizations who would like copies, please send a request to: Andrea Friedenthal, Off-Road Adventures, 801 W. Artesia Blvd., Compton, CA 90220
